About Anna Joy Pham

Anna Joy Pham is a visual artist who focuses on textiles and painting. She has a BFA in Visual Communications from the University of Texas at Arlington, is currently pursuing a Master’s in Art Education at Texas Tech University, and works as a studio artist and high school art educator.  Pham has shown her work in galleries around DFW and Texas, including the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum, Pencil on Paper Gallery, and 400H Gallery. She was also selected as a Carter Community Artist with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art for 2024. Pham currently resides and works in Fort Worth, Texas.

Artist Statement

My art is an exploration of my inner voice, an understanding of my place, and a search for realms beyond this world. This research is grounded in my identity as a first-generation Vietnamese American, my journey through grief and healing, and my search to become my higher self. All of these experiences are intertwined as I navigate the space between reality and the metaphysical.

I am embracing my upbringing in the Vietnamese Texan diaspora while also seeking new ideas about our world beyond the Western systems and religious upbringing in which I was indoctrinated in. I also advocate for mindfulness and wellness for myself and others. Humans and non-humans are placed together to explore relationships and awareness. Time and space coexist in a fluid, nonlinear way, embracing the simultaneous presence of multiple dimensions. The imagery in my work blends speculative self-portraits, familial narratives, abstract landscapes and creatures, nostalgic objects, bold colors, and sacred symbols. These elements reflect my ongoing process of self-reflection and my search for understanding the interconnectedness of life.

Life is a wild frontier, one I am navigating with curiosity, stopping along the way to document my findings. Through this process, I invite the viewer to share in the journey, to ask questions, and to be vulnerable.  There is much to discover, both internally and externally, and my hope is to explore these findings together.
